![]() ![]() ![]() In this collective biography, Mary Stanton-a noted chronicler of the left and of social justice movements in the South-explores the resources available to Depression-era Reds before the advent of the New Deal or the modern civil rights movement. In Alabama alone, twenty black men were known to have been murdered, and countless others, women included, were beaten, disabled, jailed, “disappeared,” or had their lives otherwise ruined between March 1931 and September 1935. After the Scottsboro story broke on March 25, 1931, it was open season for old-fashioned lynchings, legal (courtroom) lynchings, and mob murder. Written from the perspective of the district 17 (CPUSA) Reds who worked primarily in Alabama, it acquaints a new generation with the impact of the Great Depression on postwar black and white, young and old, urban and rural Americans. Kelley's groundbreaking Hammer and Hoe and the first to explore its key figures and actions beyond the 1930s. Red, Black, White is the first narrative history of the American communist movement in the South since Robin D. ![]()

![]() ![]() We navigate this story with the author keeping a tight hold on our hand, in what we are to understand of, or feel from, these characters and the events that unfold. Perhaps, Reid’s matter-of-fact prose was not my cup of tea, but The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is ultimately a collection of 80’s Hollywood aesthetics and landscapes that run through a simplistic YA formula until it is no longer discernible from any of its counterparts within the genre, regardless of the potential that the original idea and subject matter held. Blackmailed by a drug lord, Tony Murphy, hunted by society criminal kingpin, Garza, with the entire metropolitan police force chasing him across London, Sami has nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. The plot is fairly simple as the unlikely hero, Sami Macbeth, is caught between a rock and a hard place. ![]() First published in 2008, Mulholland Books has chosen to release this novel in the US in e-format.įast paced and action packed this thriller is a quick, entertaining read. On this list, you'll find a few others true crime books that will appeal to you if you were enthralled by Michelle McNamara's determined, empathetic, compassionate voice and relentless, diligent research. I'll Be Gone in the Dark is definitely a book that will get your blood pumping and get your mind and body ready for more unsolved cases. ![]() Sometimes, when you read a really good book, it can be hard to figure out how to follow it up. McNamara's book is stunning, but once you've soaked up every page, you'll be left with a burning question: what do I read next? By this point, you've probably heard the news that California authorities have arrested a suspect in the Golden State Killer case, the subject of Michelle McNamara's true crime book I'll Be Gone in the Dark. ![]() ![]() ![]() Although nothing romantic really happens until about two-thirds of the way through the book. Ostensibly this is a romance between two young men (18 or 19?). If you like any of the elements I mentioned earlier, though, it's worth the read. This book was definitely beautiful and had cute and meaningful moments, but I just feel like I've read it before. I think the struggle was realistic for Ari to not know what he wanted to do with his life, but that subplot almost seems unsolved by the end of this? Those moments were just frustrating for me, and I don't feel like we got to see enough of him growing out of that before the book ended. Also, Ari irritated me for most of the book, even though I know he was purposefully characterized as sensitive and sort of passive. It felt pretty formulaic and stereotypical, so I was never really shocked or emotional at anything that happened. ![]() Small town, summer, slow burn romance, family drama, a mistake that leads to more family drama and a breakup, then they make up. I saw so many glowing reviews for this that I basically harrassed my library into buying a copy, but I'm sad that my lasting impression of it is that is was just kinda average? There were certainly things I loved about it like the character development and the setting at a bakery and the gorgeous art style and how Hector would call Ari out when he was being a baby or manipulative, but I thought the rest of the plot was just kinda typical. ![]() ![]() *(Box Set Deal, Not Free) Wolf Rampant Box Set: A Fantastical Werewolf Adventure (Deal, Not Free) by Aimee Easterling.
